(To benefit the scholarship fund). October 1st, 2021
After COVID forced the cancellation of the annual Robert E. Sweeney Scholarship Fund Golf event at Fenner Hill Country Club in June of 2020, we were not able to schedule it again until Fall of 2021 based on high COVID transmission rates and a resurgence in rising new cases numbers locally and nationwide.
Our original Fall date of Friday, September 24th fell by the wayside and had to be postponed due to severe thunderstorms on that day. The event was rescheduled for Friday, October 1st but the two previous date changes resulted in just 5 foursomes (20 golfers) versus our usual 10 to 12 foursomes (48 golfers).
Nevertheless, thanks to some generous donations from Friendly Sons members who were unable to attend and other friends of the organization, a good time was had by all, a small but very appreciative group attended the post-event steak fry and we even held our legendary raffle (made possible by generous prize donations from Mike Sweeney’s Wine & Spirits and our media related friends at WPRI-TV, WNAC-TV, WLWC TV, WJAR, IHEART Radio, Cumulus Radio, Cat Country 98.1, Cox Media and Lamar Outdoor!
Despite three different dates and a lower than usual turn-out we still managed to raise enough to cover all expenses and this year’s annual scholarship! Keep an eye out for the announcement on these pages of this year’s Providence-based high school winner! We are hoping to move next year’s charitable event back to June at Fenner Hill. Please stay tuned!
